Itinerary
Day 1 – Fort Myers
Arrive today in Fort Myers, FL. Discover for yourself why Fort Myers beaches are considered among the best in the world.
Check into your hotel for a three night stay. Dinner is included this evening at local restaurant. (D)
Day 2 – Edison Ford Winter Estates – Free Time in Downtown River District – Sun Harvest Citrus – Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre
Start the day with a visit to the Edison Ford Winter Estates and discover the genius of two American innovators, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. There are many different options to explore, with nine historic buildings, acres of lush gardens, Edison’s original botanic research laboratory and the 15,000-square-foot museum filled with hundreds of inventions and artifacts, special exhibit galleries and documentaries about the famous inventors.
Next, enjoy some free time in the Downtown River District. Within this district is a maze of narrow streets, alleyways, courtyards, and brick lined sidewalks flanked with palm trees. Tucked away within that area are an abundance of small boutiques, galleries, theaters, restaurants and cafes. Along with a bunch of shaded places to tuck away for a chat and park benches to catch a rest.
This afternoon squeeze in a visit to Sun Harvest Citrus. You are in for a real treat when you walk through the doors at Sun Harvest Citrus. Cool off with freshly squeezed juices, or tasty soft-serve cones. Enjoy sweet and juicy in-season citrus along with free samples of their juice. There’s also a wide selection of distinctive Florida foods, tropical fruit wines, and unique gifts.
Return to your hotel this afternoon for some beach time or just to relax before dinner.
Tonight, enjoy dinner and a show at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. Broadway Palm Theatre features nationally selected performers, dazzling sets and costumes and a live orchestra. The show is just part of the package, as chefs put their talents to work creating a menu that changes with each production. (B,D)
Current 2022 show schedule – Singing in the Rain (Dec 31-Feb 12, 2022), Escape to Margaritaville (Feb 18-April 2, 2022), In the Heights (April 8-May 14, 2022), Rock of Ages (May 20-June 25, 2022), and Wizard of Oz (July 1-August 13, 2022)
Day 3 – Sanibel Island – Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum – Old Town Sanibel – Wildlife Refuge Tram Tour – Sunset Dolphin Cruise
Today, you visit Sanibel Island, located along the Gulf of Mexico and just a short drive from Fort Myers. It is known for its sunsets, lighthouse and beaches.
Tour the Baily-Matthews Shell Museum and its display of shells from around the world with a focus on southwest Florida. With more than 30 permanent exhibits, these spectacular shell displays offer insights into the vital roles that mollusks have played throughout history, culture, art, design, and medicine. You’ll marvel at the exquisite variety of shells—many of which you most likely never knew existed! You’ll also learn to identify local shells that you can find right here on Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
Explore the newest addition: an aquarium gallery filled with living mollusks (the animals that create shells). Learn about mollusks from around the world, including the Giant Pacific Octopus, cuttlefish, sea hares, and inhabitants of the Great Barrier Reef, fighting conchs, and the rare Junonia. Pop up into the middle of the oyster bed, then engage with animals in our two touch pools and learn from the educational staff about the mollusks you’re holding!
Enjoy a break for lunch and shopping in Old Town Sanibel. Old Town encircles the east end of the island near the Sanibel Lighthouse. Historically, it was the center of much of the island’s activity; today, it is a place to stroll quaint village shops, inns and restaurants.
This afternoon enjoy a 90-minute tram tour of J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, located on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. The refuge is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States. It is world famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations and wildlife.
And no trip on Wildlife Drive is complete without stopping by Alligator Curve, where you are almost sure to observe these prehistoric reptiles. It’s not all about the wildlife, though. You’ll also hear fascinating tales of the Calusa Indians and the early days of Sanibel and south Florida.
Next, dinner is included at a local Sanibel Island restaurant before a Sunset Dolphin Cruise. The sunsets around Sanibel and Captiva Island are breathtaking. The best way to see it is by boat out on the shimmering waters surrounding Fort Myers. Come experience wild dolphins in a magical setting and witness one of Florida’s largest populations of wading birds as they swoop in to roost for the evening. Manatees frequent these waters as well as seasonal birds such as the White Pelican and Bald Eagle. Narrated by the knowledgeable Captain and First Mate. Return to Fort Myers after cruise. (B,D)
Day 4 – Depart for Home
After breakfast, depart for home. (B)
