Day 2 – Essex Steam Train & Riverboat Cruise – Free Time at Foxwoods
For groups who only want free time to explore the wonders within Foxwoods that can be arranged. We can leave this day’s activities off you schedule.
For other groups who want traditional tour activities we head off to Essex, CT this morning for a combination train ride and boat cruise.
It starts at the historic Essex Train Station (1892) where you board the Essex Steam Train for a 12-mile journey into the heart of the unspoiled Connecticut River Valley. This steam locomotive pulls vintage coaches through the quintessential New England towns of Deep River and Chester. A highlight is travel through (undeveloped) Selden Neck State Park, accessible only by boat. The train also travels near the tidal wetlands of Pratt Cove and Chester Creek — bountiful, natural habitats for birds including Cormorants, Ducks, Swans, Greenland Geese, Blue Heron, Egrets, and Red-winged Blackbirds.
At Deep River Landing you disembark and board the Becky Thatcher Riverboat for cruise on the Connecticut River. The serenity of nature is on full display from Becky‘s multiple decks. The deep water, coves, inlets, marshes, wildlife, and rocky shoreline are, all at once, simply breathtaking! But, just as impressive are the historic sites, including Gillette Castle, Goodspeed Opera House and the Haddam Swing Bridge. It’s a wonderful outing.
Once our Riverboat returns to the dock, we find the steam train waiting for our return trip back to Essex. Where we re-board our motorcoach and return Foxwoods (B)
Day 3 – Leisurely Morning at Foxwoods – Mystic Seaport Museum – Depart for Home
Enjoy one last leisurely morning and breakfast at Foxwoods before departing for Mystic, CT. Here you visit the Mystic Seaport Museum. This is the nation’s leading maritime museum and home to the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaleship in the world. You can explore American maritime history as you climb aboard historic tall ships, stroll through a re-created 19th-century coastal village and watch a working preservation shipyard in action. You will have free time for lunch on your own before departing for home this afternoon. (B)
