Day 1 – Arrive Miami – Two Nights
Arrive in Miami, FL today and check into your Miami area hotel for a two night stay. Dinner is on own this evening.
Day 2 – Miami Sightseeing – Coral Castle – Biscayne Bay Cruise
This morning you head to Homestead to visit the Coral Castle Museum. Ed Leedskalnin has baffled scientists, engineers, and scholars since 1923. Coral Castle was built by Ed, in secret, at night, in the name of love. He weighed 100 pounds and stood just over 5 feet tall. Some blocks of coral weigh more than the largest blocks from the great pyramids of Egypt. Ed sculpted coral stone into a nine-ton gate, a 28-ton obelisk and a sun dial that show the time and season.
Referred to as a Modern Megalith, Coral Castle is compared to the ancient megalith’s of the Egyptian pyramids, Stonehenge, and is considered by many to be one of the Wonders of the World.
Next, you tour Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens. Start with a narrated tram tour with an expert guide. This tram tour offers an introduction to the history, mission, and Fairchild’s plant collections and an excellent overview of the Garden.
After your tram tour, you can explore the gardens on your own. Walk garden paths surrounded by the wonders and beauty of nature, talk to experts in horticulture and conservation science, experience an exceptional sculpture garden, see butterflies and birds at every turn; experience the butterfly and hummingbird exhibit, Wings of the Tropics.
This afternoon you enjoy a sightseeing cruise of Biscayne Bay where you have the best views to see the Downtown Miami skyline, the Port of Miami, Fisher Island, Miami Beach and Millionaire’s Row – the homes of the rich and famous.
Tonight, you enjoy dinner at La Carreta, known for Cuban classics like ropa vieja & picadillo served in a hacienda-style setting. After dinner, you stop in Domino Park for live music, mojitos and ice cream. (B,D)
Day 3 – Arrive Key West Two Nights
This morning you meet a local guide for a tour of South Beach. South Beach has been called the American Riviera and an Art Deco Playground. Yet there’s more than fine white sand and colorful buildings to South Beach’s fantasyland of exuberant Deco architecture. The Art Deco buildings are an iconic part of the city and its “sun and fun” history. South Beach offers an eclectic mix of world-class boutiques, galleries and stores. It’s also a culinary hot spot for everything from gourmet to casual beachside cuisine.
Then you depart Miami and enjoy the scenic four hour drive through the Florida Keys to Key West, the Southernmost city in the US. Check into your hotel for a two night stay. Dinner tonight is included at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurant.
Enjoy an evening at Mallory Square, considered the center of Key West with restaurants, shops, theater, museums, live entertainment and the most spectacular sunsets to be found anywhere. The nightly festival hosts visitors from all over the world who come to take part in the magicians, jugglers, clowns, psychics, local musicians, artists, and food vendors that combine for an incredible cultural experience. Day 4 – Key West Sightseeing – Conch Train – Truman’s Little White House – Earnest Hemingway Home
Start the day with a ride on the Conch Tour Train. This tour will lead you through Key West’s picturesque streets as they reveal the treasures that have and still do make Key West the magical island basking in the Caribbean sun. The romance of the architecture, the frivolity of the festivals and the eccentricities of their independence will capture your interest as your ‘engineers’ relive over 500 years of Key West history.
Then visit Truman’s Little White House. This property served as Harry Truman’s Winter Home from 1946 to 1952. It was later used by other Presidents, including Eisenhower and Kennedy. History has left its mark on the Truman Little White House since 1890 when it initially served as the command headquarters during the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II. In 1946 the historic building first served as the winter White House of President Harry S. Truman and a site for the Cold War response by later presidents. Today, the Truman Little White House is a public, living museum as well as a retreat and place of government business by our nation’s leaders.
Next, is a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. Nestled in the heart of Old Town Key West, this unique property was home to one of America’s most honored and respected authors. Wander through the lush grounds and enjoy the whimsy of the more than sixty cats that live here.
Dinner tonight is included at Camille’s Restaurant. Camille’s Restaurant is not only the favorite local’s restaurant, it is also a favorite for Key West’s visitors. To really experience Key West you have to experience Camille’s! It’s a funky restaurant that has been around for over 20 years. (B,D)
