Day 1 – Arrive Louisville
Staging is important to any event tour and this one offers several opportunities for you. Encourage your travelers to theme their clothing to each evening’s musical era, or wear outfits suitable for Derby Day. Come prepared for classroom and music history experiences. Your guests are here for the fun of it all and the more character you put into your marketing the more laughs they will share. Groups wanting a luxury lodging experience might upgrade to The Brown Hotel or Galt House.
However you get your customers primed, we will get them turned on, as tonight you enjoy a private dinner cruise on the Belle of Louisville. The meal is a traditional Southern Buffet followed by music from a jazzy little combo known as the Tin Pan Alley Cats. They are a dance band playing music created in the Jazz Age of The Roaring 20s which shimmied into the Swing Era of 30s and 40s. You will be dancing, singing, laughing to familiar tunes, hot numbers casting a retro feel to an evening aboard a vintage riverboat. As the sun sets on the Ohio River your Cats party into history. Day 2 – Derby Training Camp
Morning is free for optional tours, we are happy to book you into The Louisville Slugger and/or the Muhammad Ali Museums to name a couple of diversions.
This afternoon visit the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs; it celebrates the tradition, history, hospitality and pride of the world-renown event that is the Kentucky Derby. Your education begins with a class titled, “Hattitude,” learn how to make your own Derby Hat and discover that the Kentucky Derby is as much about watching people as it horses, everyone accessorizes with stylish hats. Enjoy a lesson titled “Horse Talk,” where you will learn the secrets of picking a winner. This class includes tricks like reading a horse’s eyes, ears and tails.
Once classes are complete, sneak out the back door and into elevators that carry you up to the Starting Gate Rooftop Garden. Here, six stories above the track, is a deluxe private space with scenic vantage points from a tiered balcony. The entire track is visible from up here, including the backside. There are large video monitors projecting close up action and you are armed with a free Racing Program and (to take the anxiety out of betting) every person receives Five (5) Free $2.00 Bets. Here from the Rooftop for the next four hours you enjoy a wonderful evening. The betting booths are open (there’s a race every 30 minutes) and cash bars are hopping, may we suggest a Mint Julep? This is an open-air venue with a covered roof, a stage, dance floor and entertainment by Rosie and The Rockabillies.
Following dinner, and between the races, your musical odyssey continues with tunes from the earliest years of Rock & Roll. Rockabilly was created by blending Rock n’ Roll with a Hillbilly beat, then made famous by such legends as Elvis, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis to name a few. It is perhaps an odd combination music and racing, but what the heck. From high atop Churchill Downs, with Rosie belting out those famous dance songs, and the wind blowing your air, it’s time to “make a little bet, do a little dance, rock out tonight”. (B,D)
