Itinerary
Day 1 – Helen, GA – Oktoberfest –
Today, travel to Helen, GA. Check into your local hotel for a three night stay.
This afternoon and evening you enjoy Oktoberfest. You have an admission ticket for the Marketplace with shops, craft booths, music and dancing.
Tonight, you also enjoy Oktoberfest at the Festhalle with dinner included. Within the Festhalle, rows of long tables are arranged so that diners can enjoy their food and the entertainment at the same time. Visitors can try a wurst, schnitzel or a brat on a roll, accompanied by German beer. German-style bands from around the country and around the world play on the stage for your listening and viewing pleasure. (D)
Day 2 – Guided Tour of Helen with Costumed Guide – BabyLand General Hospital – Nacoochee Village – Folk Pottery Demo – Wine Tasting
This morning, meet your guide, who will be dressed in an authentic Bavarian Costume, for a tour of Helen. Helen emulates a traditional Alpine village, including cobblestone streets and themed buildings. You will learn about the historical areas and points of interest surrounding the village.
Then visit the new BabyLand General Hospital in Cleveland, Georgia, voted one of the Travel Channel’s Top Ten Toylands. Beautifully situated on 650 acres in the North Georgia Mountains, this Southern Style home filled with Cabbage Patch Kids will capture your imagination. Babyland General Hospital is the only place in the world where you can witness the birth of a hand-sculpted Cabbage Patch Kid.
This afternoon visit Nacoochee Village, where you can browse the unique shops that are part of the Village. Enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee and catch up on all the news. If you enjoy flyfishing, or hunting for antique treasures you can find it all at the Village. Visit an 1876 Grist Mill still producing grains, a fly shop with one and a half miles of trophy trout stream, or a have a pizza. Love to hunt for antiques, then you will love the Antique Mall, with three floors full of antiques, and collectibles. Enjoy lunch on own at one of the area’s finest restaurants, featuring fresh steaks and seafood cooked on a live fire grill.
Also included is a visit to the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia. The Museum showcases the handcraft skills of one of the South’s premier grassroots art forms, and explores the historical importance and changing role of folk pottery in southern life. You will also see a demonstration of a turning wheel and discuss the process of decorating and glazing folk pottery.
Then you will enjoy a Tour and Tasting at the Sautee Nacoochee Winery. Sample the wines, visit with the winemaker, and enjoy a glass of your favorite on the large outdoor deck overlooking the vines and pastures of the historic Nacoochee Valley.
At the end of the day, enjoy a sit-down meal at one Downtown Helen’s German Restaurants. (B,D)
Day 3 – Blue Ridge Scenic Railway – Anna Ruby Falls Option – Oktoberfest
On a day trip out of Helen you motor over the Mountains, through the Nantahala Wilderness to the town of Blue Ridge. Here you ride the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. Departing from the charming mountain village of Blue Ridge, GA, it travels into the lush Chattahoochee National Forest. A great rail excursion. During the train ride your groups will have a box lunch to hold their appetite.
As you return to Helen, those who wish will spend the afternoon shopping for imported cuckoo clocks, steins, handcrafted quilts, hand carved bowls and platters, locally made pottery, candy and baked goods and more. The more adventurous in the group will take a short hike to Anna Ruby Falls. The waterfall is accessible via a half mile paved trail.
Later this afternoon, return to the hotel for some R & R or explore the streets and shops of Helen.
Tonight, you can enjoy another evening of Oktoberfest. Dinner is on own this evening, only admission is included. Sample the German music, dancing, food & drinks at any of the local restaurants! Enjoy Waltzes, Polkas and the Chicken Dance! (B,L)
Day 4 – Departure Day – After breakfast, depart for home. (B)
