Day 1 – Norfolk & Virginia Beach – Luncheon – Virginia International Tattoo – Spring Garden Gala
Arrive in Norfolk, VA in time for a luncheon with a visit from the Tattoo Entertainers, perhaps a drummer or piper. Historically, tattoos stem from a 17th-century European tradition of military drummers alerting soldiers that it was time to return to their barracks for the evening. After hearing the call of the local regiments’ fifes and drums, the Dutch Low Country innkeepers would call “Doe den tap toe!” – “Turn off the taps!” The “tap too” evolved over time, and the word “tattoo” now refers to a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands.
Later this afternoon, you have premium reserved seats for the Virginia International Tattoo – long regarded as the most patriotic of the world’s great tattoos – it thrills audiences year after year with an awe-inspiring spectacle of music and might. It’s a show of military splendor – part parade and part-theater and sometimes part circus. It features regimental bands and drill teams, drums and pipes, and mass bugle ensembles. It offers an astounding display of inspirational military music, majestic massed pipes and drums, show-stopping drill team maneuvers, international bands and dancers, and much more. It’s an annual celebration of patriotism and international goodwill, a must-see of the most exciting events in the world.
After the show, you travel to Virginia Beach, and a two night stay at an Oceanfront Hotel. After you have had time to freshen up, you head over to the nearby historic Cavalier Hotel for a Spring Garden Gala. Enjoy an elegant indoor and outdoor reception with cash bar and piano entertainment. Followed by gourmet dinner in the Grand Ballroom.
The Cavalier Hotel was once a popular venue for big band entertainment that showcased every major big band leader of the era including Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, Glenn Miller and Lawrence Welk. The Jeffersonian architecture was designed in the spirit of Monticello, with nods to locations such as Woodlawn and The Lawn at the University of Virginia. Famous guests included F. Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald, Will Rogers, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, many U.S. Presidents, Muhammad Ali, Bette David, July Garland, Elizabeth Taylor and Doris Day. (L,D)
Day 2 – Military Aviation Museum – Liberty Call Luncheon – Private Air Show – Salute to America Dinner
This morning, you tour the Virginia Military Aviation Museum home to one of the largest private collections of World War I and World War II era military aircraft in the world. Each plane has been beautifully restored to its prior military condition. You will have a guided tour on arrival, and then you are seated for a Liberty Call Luncheon in the one of the Museum’s Hangars.
This plated meal is followed by a musical program with a quartet performing the music of WWII. You will be transported back to the era of Big Band music, Jazz harmonies and swinging choreography. Music made famous in the war movies you grew up with, this show includes a grand finale honoring those who served and are currently serving.
Then immediately following lunch, you’ll move outside to your seats on the tarmac for an afternoon air show. Historical Aircraft from WWII and Korea will start their engines, taxi, takeoff, flyby multiple times and land in front of the crowd. There will be historical commentary during the show and you will have a chance to meet the pilots and photograph their planes. Returning to your hotel this afternoon, you enjoy some free time at the Boardwalk or on the beach.
