Itinerary
Day 1 – Halifax, Nova Scotia – Evening in North End
Arrive today in Halifax, Nova Scotia where you check into your downtown hotel for a three-night stay. Enjoy a free evening in North End Halifax, a trendy region known for its independent businesses and eclectic arts scene, award-winning restaurants, boutique and second-hand shops, colorful houses and lively nightlife.
Day 2 – Halifax Citadel National Historic Site – Halifax Waterfront – Maritime Museum of the Atlantic – Dinner Cruise
Start the day with a tour of the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. Step back in time and explore the impressive Halifax Citadel with a tour guide dressed in historic clothing. This complimentary guided tour is a great place to start your exploration of the many period rooms, exhibits, films, and different perspectives on the history of Halifax.
Learn about the fascinating history of the four successive versions of this fort and the role the Halifax Citadel played in the protection of the British Naval Base and development of the city. Hear accounts of daily life in 1869 from a soldier and his family as you tour the Guard Room, Tailor Shop, Defensive Ditch, Barracks, and more.
Next, enjoy some free time and lunch on own at the Halifax Waterfront, a bustling hotspot in the city. With one of the world’s longest urban boardwalks spanning the length of the waterfront for 2.5 miles, from Pier 21 at the Halifax Seaport to Casino Nova Scotia. Visit unique shops along the boardwalk, enjoy waterfront dining or explore the museums on the waterfront.
The afternoon features a visit to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Located in the heart of Halifax’s historic waterfront, there’s no better place to get immersed in Nova Scotia’s rich maritime heritage than the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Visit Canada’s largest and oldest maritime museum and discover the stories, people and events that shape this province and its connections with the sea. Exhibits feature Nova Scotia’s marine history including those relating to the Titanic disaster.
End the day with a dinner cruise on the Harbour Queen. Experience the sights and flavors of Halifax. Indulge on a three-course, locally sourced menu, as you travel through the Halifax harbor and along the scenic Northwest Arm. Take in the sights of notable landmarks including the Halifax waterfront, Georges Island, the Dingle Tower, and more. Enjoy live music, and a full-service bar. (B,D)
Day 3 – Peggy’s Cove – Lunenburg Tour – Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic
Today features Nova Scotia South Shore Touring. Start in Peggy’s Cove where you will discover the rustic charm of this renowned fishing village and see one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.
Next, travel takes you to the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Lunenburg, the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Established in 1753, it has retained its original layout and overall appearance, based on a rectangular grid pattern drawn up in the home country. The inhabitants have managed to safeguard the city’s identity throughout the centuries by preserving the wooden architecture of the houses, some of which date from the 18th century.
While in Lunenburg, visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic to learn about the town’s famous seafaring heritage. Browse the exhibits and aquarium, or exploring the decks and passageways of real ships at dockside. Return to Halifax this evening and enjoy dinner on own. (B)
Day 4 – Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre – Confederation Bridge – Prince Edward Island – Charlottetown – Evening of Theatre
Departing Halifax, stop in Millbrook, NS to learn about the Mi’kmaq people at Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre. Then cross Confederation Bridge, the world’s longest continuous multi-span bridge, to Prince Edward Island. Check into your Charlottetown hotel for a two-night stay. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and an evening of theatre at the Confederation Centre of the Arts (as available). (B,D)
Day 5 – Charlottetown Tour – Prince Edward Island Touring – Anne of Green Gables – Lobster Supper
This morning, enjoy a guided tour of Charlottetown, Canada’s birthplace. This tour will bring to life the wonderful history of Great George street and Canadian history and Prince Edwards Islands role in shaping it. From the Island’s first inhabitants to Confederation and beyond.
This afternoon, tour the scenic North Shore of Prince Edward Island. Drive by seaside fishing villages, red cliffs, white beaches, sand dunes and the green fields of Prince Edward Island National Park.
Also included today is a visit to the Anne of Green Gables Heritage Place, the inspiration for Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic books. Walk in the footsteps of one of Canada’s most celebrated authors and immerse yourself in the landscape that inspired the setting of Anne of Green Gables. Part of L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish National Historic Site, Green Gables tells the story of both the author, L.M. Montgomery, and her most famous heroine, Anne Shirley. Explore the new visitor centre, original house, 19th century gardens, farmyard, walking trails – including the Haunted Wood and Lovers Lane – gift shop and The Cordial Café.
End the day with a traditional lobster supper. Prince Edward Island is well known for their lobster. (B,D)
Day 6 – Cape Breton – Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site – Bras d’Or Lake
This morning, take the Ferry over the Northumberland Strait back to Nova Scotia. Then travel to Cape Breton Island, the Scotland of North America, via the Canso Causeway. Experience the Island that’s been ranked as the most beautiful by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine Cape Breton Island truly offers a world of wondrous sightseeing opportunities.
The day also includes a visit to the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site in Baddeck. Get a rare glimpse into the extraordinary heart and mind of a world-famous inventor whose genius helped shape the modern world. Pull the curtain back on Alexander Graham Bell’s interests and inventions, spanning airplanes and kites, to deaf education and artificial respiration.
Arriving in Bras d’Or Lake, check into your hotel for a two-night stay. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (B,D)
Day 7 – Full Day Cabot Trail Touring
This morning, meet your local guide and begin a full day on the Cabot Trail. The Cabot Trail is considered one of the world’s most scenic destinations, with stunning ocean vistas, old-growth forests, prehistoric rock scarred by glaciers, and the mysterious Cape Breton Highlands. Enjoy unforgettable views of Cape Breton’s rugged coastline. A boxed lunch is included with your tour today. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)
Day 8 – The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site – Halifax, NS
Start the day with a tour of the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. Surrounded by Cape Breton’s rocky shoreline, the Fortress of Louisbourg brings you back to French colonial life between 1713 and 1758. First the home of L’nu, also known as the Mi’kmaq, the 18th century brought French, Basque, German, English, Irish, Scottish, and African people to its shores. Immerse yourself in this diverse history as you explore a beautiful coastal landscape. Take in the looming fortifications, kitchen gardens, and elegant houses of the reconstruction, then wander original 18th century ruins for a full experience of the past come to life.
Touring continues this afternoon along the shore of the Bras d’Or Lake to the mainland, and back to Halifax for one last night in the Maritimes. Enjoy a free evening in Halifax for dinner on own. (B)
